FACTS

COLOURS and VARIATIONS:  

  • Opaque to translucent
  • Red inclusions are caused by the presence of Hematite or Red Jasper
  • Gold flecks are small pieces of Pyrite

CRYSTAL FAMILY:    Chalcedony - Quartz

FORMATION:   Forms in cavities and crevices when silica-rich groundwater evaporates at low temperatures.

CRYSTAL SYSTEM:   Trigonal

CHEMICAL FORMULA: SiO2 

HARDNESS:   6.5 on the Mohs scale

ORIGIN:   South Africa, Madagascar
