Shungite is a crystal of protection and purification​ of our mind, body and soul.  One of Judy Hall's "wouldn't be without crystals".  One of the oldest crystals, carbon based, but formed in a period before carbon appeared on earth.  It comes from a highly polluted lake in Russia, yet the water in the lake is pure.  This is one crystal where there has been published scientific research identifying its purification effect and how it rejuvenates cells.  It's becoming very popular for its healing benefits, so as demand increases, so is the price.  It's also known for it's ancient memory and stored wisdom from past civilisations.

HISTORY and OVERVIEW 

Shungite is a carbon-based stone that was first discovered in 1879 by Russian geologist Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Inostrantsev who named Shungite after the Shun’ga Village in Karelia Republic, northern Russia where it was found.  

It is believed to have been formed over 2 million years ago and has been used as folk medicine for hundreds of years prior to it's documented discovery.  When Tsar Peter the Great stopped in Karelia with his army, he was told to bathe in water, he felt so refreshed by this, he commissioned Russia's first spa for others to experience it's healing and purifying benefits. He also insisted that his soldiers in the Russian army carry a piece of Shungite with them to purify their water.

In 1996 scientist Sir Harold Kroto, Robert Curl, and Richard Smalley, won the Nobel Peace Prize for discovering naturally occurring antioxidants within Shungite and "fullerenes", the hollow molecular carbon cages within its unique structure.  In 2017, further research suggests that the fullerness within shungite has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect against UVB skin damage.  

The purest form of Shungite is called Elite Shungite, or Noble Shungite, it's extremely brittle and quite rare making it expensive and difficult to source.

FORMATION:  Most shungite is found deep in the earth, but can also be found pushed near the surface in areas of volcanic activity.  Shungite is mainly formed from carbon but also contains micro and macro-minerals such as quartz, mica, albite, and pyrite.
