HISTORY, FOLKLORE and OVERVIEW

Blue Kyanite was first discovered in 1789 by A.G. Werner and was named after the Greek word “kuanos”, meaning “blue”.

Blue Kyanite is often formed in Quartz, as Quartz is an amplifier of energy, rough or specimen pieces found in Quartz have a more powerful energy.

COLOURS and VARIATIONS
Kyanite is most commonly deep blue but it also forms in white, pink, orange, green and black.

BLUE:  Normally grows in Blades or Crystalline habit

BLACK:  Normally grows in fans

UV REACTION:  Not normally fluorescent under UV light, but can occasionally fluoresce  → weak pink-red

FORMATION:   Kyanite is a mineral found in metamorphic rocks.   It normally forms from the high-pressure alteration of clay minerals during the metamorphism of sedimentary rocks.   Often found growing in Quartz or Mica.

DIAPHANEITY: Transparent to Opaque

LUSTRE: Vitreous, Sub-Vitreous, Greasy, Pearly

STREAK:  Colourless

CRYSTAL HABIT:  Kyanite generally forms in Blades or Tabular, but can be found in sometimes occurs as radiating masses of crystals

CRYSTAL SYSTEM:   Triclinic

CHEMICAL FORMULA:  Al₂SiO₅

HARDNESS:   4.5 on the Mohs scale

ORIGIN:   Brazil, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa
