HISTORY and OVERVIEW

Pronounced: foo-shyte  (foo as in book or look)

A green, chromium bearing variety of muscovite.

Discovered in 1842 by Karl F. Emil von Schafhäutl.  He named Fuchsite  in honour of Johann Nepomuk von Fuchs, professor of chemistry and mineralogy at University of Landshut, Germany, curator of The Mineral Collection.

Technically, most Fuchsite seen on the market has various inclusions and is more accurately Verdite.

Verdite is the trade name for Fuchsite with inclusions of Albite, Chlorite, Corundum, Diaspore, Margarite, Quartz, Rutile and Talc.

FORMATION:    Muscovite which is coloured green with chromium inclusions.  Normally found as tiny grains scattered through rock mass, as they grown with other minerals (Albite, Chlorite, Corundum, Diaspore, Margarite, Quartz, Rutile and Talc) it is known as Verdite.  However most crystal / rock sellers call these rocks Fuchsite.

As the aluminium in Muscovite is slowly substituted with chromium it turns a very light green colour.  As more chromium takes over the colour becomes a darker green.   

Green Aventurine is formed when small inclusions of Fuchsite, or other green Muscovites, are found in Quartz.
