Collection: Chrysocolla

Tranquility  •  Inner-Strength  •  Speaking with Love

Chrysocolla is a crystal that helps us communicate our feelings from a place of love and to know when to stop talking and listen so that we can understand other peoples point of view, it's really helpful for difficult conversations and for musicians.  It brings calm and tranquillity, helps us let go of anything we don't need to hold on to and brings back our personal power.  Chrysocolla nurtures emotional healing so that past baggage doesn't effect future relationships.

Chrysocolla is a bright sea green-blue colour but rarely forms on it's own.  Chrysocolla is often found as a combination stone with Malachite (green, a loving and protective crystal that provokes change)  / Cuprite (orange-red-brown;  helpful for stopping actions of others effecting you).

HISTORY and OVERVIEW

Chrysocolla is often found on the surface of earth.  It is what miners search for when they are looking for Copper.  Copper is formed in "veins" in the earths crust, as it's pushed to the surface and mixes with other minerals it forms Chrysocolla. So when miners find Chrysocolla on the surface, they know if they dig deeper they will uncover Copper.

Chrysocolla is formed when copper is oxidised when exposed to water.  If the water also contains carbonic acid, the acid dissolves the water and forms new mineraloids, most commonly Malachite.

Chrysocolla is getting extremely rare due to the Ukraine war.  Miners are able to grind down Chrysocolla and extract the Copper in it, they are able to fetch more money selling the Copper for weapons than they can selling Chrysocolla to crystal carvers / wholesalers.   Even though Chrysocolla is very expensive, if you'd like a piece we recommend buying it now before the prices skyrocket further.

Chrysocolla was first discovered by Theophrastus in 315 BC.  It gets its name from the Greek chrysos, "gold", and kolla, "glue".

FACTS

HEALTH RISKS:  None known, you should always treat mineral specimens with care.  As this often forms with Malachite which is a toxic crystal we recommend washing your hands after handling, especially rough, unpolished pieces and keeping away from pets and children.

APPEARANCE and VARIATIONS

COLOURS: Chrysocolla is a sea blue colour but rarely forms on it's own.  Chrysocolla is often found as a combination stone with Malachite (green) and Cuprite (orange/red/brown).

CRYSTAL ASSOCIATIONS:  The main crystals associated with Chrysocolla are:

  • Malachite (green)
  • Tenorite (black)
  • Limonite (yellow)
  • Cuprite (orange - red - brown)
  • Quartz with Shattuckite (bright turquoise blue)
  • Azurite (royal blue)
  • Calcite
  • Dioptase
  • Tenorite

UV REACTION:  Chrysocolla doesn't react with UV light

DIAPHANEITY: Translucent to opaque

LUSTRE: Vitreous, Waxy, Earthy

STREAK:  White to blue/green

CRYSTAL FAMILY:

        Mineraloid
                ↓
Phyllosilicate Mineral
                ↓
         Chrysocolla

FORMATION:

Chrysocolla is a sea blue colour but rarely forms on it's own.  Chrysocolla (turquoise - blue) forms together with:

  • Malachite (green)
  • Tenorite (black)
  • Limonite (yellow)
  • Cuprite (orange - red - brown)
  • Quartz with Shattuckite (bright turquoise blue)

Chrysocolla is often found on the surface of earth.  It is what miners search for when they are looking for Copper.  Copper is formed in "veins" in the earths crust, as it's pushed to the surface and mixes with other minerals it forms Chrysocolla. CRYSTAL SYSTEM:   Orthorhombic

CRYSTAL HABIT:  Massive, nodular, Botryoidal

CHEMICAL FORMULA: Cu2–xAlx{H2–xSi2O5)(OH)4•nH2O (x<1)

HARDNESS:   2.5 - 3.5 on the Mohs scale

LOCATIONS:  Worldwide but most mining occurs in:

  • Australia:  Mount Gunson and Moonta mines in South Australia and the Whim Creek and Starra mines in Western Australia
  • Arizona, USA
  • Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Peru
  • Mexico

ZODIAC:  Gemini Virgo Taurus

ANNIVERSARY:   -

PLANETS:  Venus

ARCHANGEL:

VIBRATION:  5

CLEANSING:  Our favourite way to cleanse Chrysocolla is with natural water, but as water can damage Chrysocolla (and Malachite), sitting it next to water, or a running stream, or letting water run over it briefly and then drying it thoroughly.

CARE:  Chrysocolla is a very soft crystal, we recommend to protect Chrysocolla from:

🧴 Cleaners - abrasive or chemical
✂️  Sharp objects
〰️  Ultrasonic cleaners
💦  Water - avoid submerging or soaking
