Labradorite is also called "Fire Rock" or "Spectrolite" and is known as "The Stone of Protection and Bringer of Light".  An extremely spiritual stone, that helps us find our way in life and leads us to where our higher-self ought to be.  It's black inclusions absorb lower negative energies and if you're lucky enough to find a piece with a flash, it's that reflection of light repels negativity away from us.

HISTORY and OVERVIEW

Legend of an Inuit Warrior set out to find the Northern Lights which had disappeared from the sky. Inuit people believed the Northern Lights were the lights of their ancestors.  He walked for a long time until he came across some rocks on the shoreline of Labrador, Northern Canada. Within the rocks he saw the magical dancing Northern Lights, so he cracked open the rock with a spear to release them. The lights climbed back into the sky, but some stayed captured in the rock.  

Labradorite was also known as "Fire Rock" by Inuit Tribes, and said to have many supernatural properties. The Inuit people used powdered Labradorite as a potent remedy to cure sickness and a multitude of ailments believing it gave new life and increased energy, drawn from the ancestral spirits inside.  Inuit people believed Labradorite connected them with guardianship from their ancestors, bought vigour in their daily life and helped relieve them of anxiety.

 

Labradorite was first discovered on the Isle of Paul near the Labrador Peninsula in Canada.

CRYSTAL FAMILY:   Feldspar Mineral

FORMATION:  Found in mafic igeneous rock (eg basalt, gabbro, norite, anorthosite). 

Some pieces of Labradorite display bright rainbow colours known as the schiller effect. Light reflects from a twinning surface within the stone (rather than from the surface), Labradorite is so well known for these spectacular colours that the effect is known as "labradorescence".
