HISTORY and OVERVIEW

Originally known as "Scarlet Quartz" and used in the late nineteenth century to describe Quartz with fine-grained red Hematite inclusions found in iron mines from Cumberland, England. Also called Muscovite or Cherry Quartz.

Strawberry Quartz in a a marketing term used for specimens of Pink to Red Quartz or Quartzite.

The Quartz gets its colour from small inclusions of Hematite, Lepidolite or Alurgite (Red Muscovite).

Strawberry Quartz is often Aventurescent due to grains of mica in the rock.

APPEARANCE and VARIATIONS

Strawberry Quartz can be confused with Rose Quartz. The colour of Strawberry Quartz is caused by light reflecting from tiny Hematite or Mica inclusions which have the appearance of "Strawberry Seeds". Rose Quartz is has a smooth, more consistent colour caused by trace elements of titanium, iron or manganese and rarely Dumortierite.

COLOURS: Strawberry Quartz gets its colour from small grains of Mica (Muscovite), Alurgite, Hematite, Lepidolite, or Piemontite. These inclusions have the appearance of Strawberry seeds.

FORMATION: Strawberry Quartz is a Quartzite, a metamorphic rock that forms when a sandstone is subjected to heat and pressure. It often displays Aventurescence because during metamorphism the mica grains in the rock are orientiented with their reflective surfaces perpendicular to the direction of metamorphic compression.
