HISTORY 

Citrine was found first discovered in Greece between 300 and 150 BC, during the Hellenistic Age and was used to calm tempers, soothe anger, as talisman and to manifest prosperity by the Egyptians, Greeks and Roman Priests.  

The name “citrine” was used to refer to all yellow gemstones as early as 1385, when the word was first recorded in English.  It wasn't until later that Citrine and Topaz were identified as having completely different compositions that Topaz was distinguished and given its own name.

In the 17th Century Citrine was used on the handles of daggers, it was difficult to find so pieces made with Citrine were valuable and very important to their owners.  

In the mid-18th century mineralogists discovered that Amethyst could be heat-treated to produce yellow - orange - lemon  Citrine with the same chemical composition as naturally heated Citrine.  This made Citrine more affordable and is still today what most people think of when we think of Citrine and is what is sold in most crystal retailers.    Now natural Citrine is a rare find, pieces over a few inches will cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.   

In Greek mythology, Citrine was associated with Demeter, the Goddess of the harvest and agriculture. 

The process of heating Amethyst doesn't change the actual structure of the crystal, it changes the colour and the light frequency it radiates from purple-violet to yellow-orange-brown. Therefore all things that are associated with the yellow colour spectrum (solar plexus, abundance, positivity) are associated with the now, yellow crystal.  

Many healers feel that natural Citrine has a stronger energy.

NATURAL v HEAT TREATED

Natural Citrine is rare and expensive.  Most of the Citrine found in the market is heat treated Amethyst.  

There are five types of "crystals", all called Citrine, on the market:

1.  Natural Citrine - Amethyst with iron inclusions that was naturally heated in the earth before it was mined.  This rarely happens in nature so it's very expensive, a pale brown-yellow, champagne colour. 

2.  Natural Colour Enhanced Citrine - Amethyst that has been naturally heated in the earth before it was mined and then colour enhanced by heating

3.  Citrine - Heat Treated Amethyst - Amethyst that has been removed from the earth and heat treated in a kiln.  This is what is most commonly sold in crystal stores, a bright yellow - orange colour, often showing some white quartz.

4.  Lab grown Citrine -  This has the same chemical composition and mineral properties as natural Citrine but has been grown in a lab (mostly in Russia) using a hydrothermal method.  This normally has high clarity and no inclusions and is most commonly used in jewellery making.  

5.  Imitation, fake coloured glass - synthetic corundum is extremely hard, 9 on the Mohs scale, has high clarity and no inclusions, this is most commonly used in cheap "fashion jewellery".

CLEANSING:  Citrine is one of only a few crystals that are self-cleansing.  While Citrine doesn't need cleansing if you feel your piece needs a recharge, our favourite way to to that is by putting it in the sun.  We recommend doing this at sunrise or sunset as direct full sun can cause the crystal to fade.  

CARE:  Protect from direct full sunlight to avoid fading.  Avoid rapid temperature changes to avoid cracking.
