Fluorite, also called Fluorspar, is known as the "Crystal of Study" or "Crystal of Focus".   Fluorite helps put anything in order, our thoughts, emotions, priorities and our physical body.  It helps us process, absorb and recall information.  Yellow Fluorite is also helpful for creative inspirtation and to encourage cooperation.

HISTORY and OVERVIEW

The word "fluorescence" came about in 1852 when George Gabriel Stokes discovered the ability of fluorite specimens to produce a blue glow when illuminated with light, which in his words was "beyond the violet end of the spectrum."   Not all Fluorite's glow, fluorescence in Fluorite is thought to be caused when trace amounts of yttrium, europium, samarium, or other elements substitute calcium in the mineral structure.

Fluorite has many uses, as an additive in water or toothpaste to prevent tooth decay, as a coating on glass, as a telethon non-stick cooking surface, optical lenses in microscopes, telescopes, and cameras,

COLOURS and VARIATIONS

Transparent to Translucent.  
The lighter the colour has the least impurities, making them higher grade.
Colours range from clear, blue, green, purple, yellow and brown.


CRYSTAL FAMILY:    Halide Minerals

FORMATION:   Most fluorite occurs as vein fillings in rocks that have been subjected to hydrothermal activity. These veins often contain metallic ores (tin, sulphides, silver, lead, zinc or copper). Fluorite is also found in the fractures and vugs of some limestones and dolomites. Fluorite can be massive, granular, octahedral or cubic crystals.

HARDNESS:   5 on the Mohs scale

ORIGIN:   Fluorite is found all over the world but predominant sources are China, Mexico, Mongolia, and South Africa.
