Sputnik, also called Orange Aragonite, Golfball Aragonite, Sputnik Aragonite, Tufa or Tchazar Crystal, is a gentle calming crystal.  Aragonite is helpful when we feel overwhelmed, it reduces fear, calms and brings patience.  It helps us to not take on too much and supports us to know how and when to delegate.  It's a very grounding crystal that connects us with nature, helping us receive comfort in nature and balances our spiritual / physical being if we are floating too much in the spiritual world.

HISTORY

Aragonite is one of the three calcium carbonate minerals that naturally occurs within mother nature (the other two being Calcite and Vaterite). It's commonly found crystallizsd in the form of small prismatic crystals, masses, stalactites, and spherical radiating aggregates.  Over time, Aragonite will re-crystallize into a more stable form of calcite.  Blue and Pink Aragonite are examples of this process. 

Aragonite was discovered in 1790 by Abraham Gottlob Werner in Molina de Aragón, Spain.

Several marine animals are made of Aragonite! Some everyday examples of Aragonite occurring in the marine ecosphere are mollusk shells, coral skeletons, and cave stalactites.

FORMATION:   Aragonite is the high pressure polymorph of calcium carbonate which occurs in high pressure metamorphic rocks.  It frequently forms in near-surface environments at ambient temperatures. 

CRYSTAL SYSTEM:  Orthorhombic 

CRYSTAL HABIT:  Pseudohexagonal, prismatic crystals, acicular, columnar, globular, reniform, pisolitic, coralloidal, stalactitic, internally banded

CHEMICAL FORMULA: CaCO3

HARDNESS:   3.5 on the Mohs scale

ORIGIN:   Sputniks are mostly found in Morocco.

CARE: Aragonite is a soft but fragile and brittle crystal and should be protected, it will shatter if knocked or dropped and is easily scratched.
