Collection: Gypsum

Gypsum is the family name given to a group of crystals includes Selenite, Satin Spar and Desert Rose

Selenite is the rare, more expensive, transparent variety of Gypsum that forms in crystal or crystalline masses but is commonly a name used interchangeably with Gypsum.

Most retailers market and name what is correctly called Satin Spar, "Selenite".  The majority of customers who ask for "Selenite" are looking for Satin Spar, the white or orange fibrous calcite.  Similarly people will talk about Desert Rose as a form of Selenite, whereas technically it is a form of Gypsum.  On our website we will refer to Satin Spar as "Selenite", as that is what it is known as / most commonly called.  And we refer to, what is technically Selenite, as True Selenite.

Some of the largest crystals ever found are of Selenite, the largest being 12 metres long and 55 tonnes, found in the Cave of the Crystals, Naica Mine, Mexico being 12 metres long and weighing 55 tons.
