Rhodochrosite, also called Inca Rose Stone or Raspberry Spar, is a beautiful and sought after crystal, not just because of its delicate and intricate patterns, but because of the loving energy it exudes particularly for anyone who feels unloved.  It's known for nurturing and healing our emotions while gently lifting our spirits and helping us feel relaxed and calm again.  Rhodochrosite is also a lovely crystal to hold at times when we miss our loved ones, strengthening our spiritual connection with them.

HISTORY and OVERVIEW

Rhodochrosite was first discovered by Native American Inca people in the 12th-13th century, in Argentina where it formed as stalagmites in Inca silver mines.  They named the stone Inca Rose , and believed it held the blood of their ancestral rulers.

In 1813 Romanian J.F.L. Haussmann, gave this beautiful stone its name Rhodochrosite, after the Greek word "rose colour".

Rhodochrosite can often be confused with less expensive Rhodonite or Pork Stone.  Rhodonite has dark brown or back uneven veins or zones, whereas Rhodochrosite has light-coloured, mostly parallel banding.  Pork Stone is the trade (or marketing) term for Red Banded Calcite, which colour tends to have larger white bands, and is more translucent and waxy than Rhodochrosite.

CRYSTAL FAMILY:    Carbonate Mineral - Anhydrous Carbonates - Calcites - Rhodochrosite

FORMATION:   Often formed in fractures and cavities of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, frequently with deposits of silver.   Rhodochrosite crystals are rare, normally found formed with tetrahedrite and sometimes quartz crystals, selling for thousands of dollars each.
