HISTORY 

Amazonite dates back to 14,000 - 16,000 BC where Sumerian / Babylonians used it for seals.  It wasn't until 1847 that Amazonite was given it's name by a German mineralogist August Breithaupt.

There are two theories about how Amazonite was named after.  Some believe it was named after the semi-mythical female Amazonian warriors of Ancient Mesopotamia, who adorned their shields with Amazonite for protection.  Others believe it was named after the Amazon River in Brazil

Ancient Egyptians carved Amazonite into prayer beads, amulets figures and to carve out tablets displaying some chapters of the now famous Egyptian funerary rites. An Amazonite scarab beetle ring was found in the tomb of Tutankhamen.

Amazonite is believed to have been worn by Jewish High Priests during Biblical times.

The stone was first reported back in 1847 by A. Breithaupt and its name derives from the Amazon River in Brazil, which host an abundance of Amazonite.

Due to it’s forming in masses, many past civilizations used Amazonite as armor, talismans, amulets, trinkets, and writing slabs. For many years Amazonite’s colour was believed to be derived from copper, but a 1985 study suggests otherwise. The study showed that the color was actually created from small traces of lead and water within the feldspar.

APPEARANCE and VARIATIONS
Colours range from turquoise, to green depending on levels of lead content within the mineral.  The depth of colour can vary from pale to vivid depending on amounts of lead and water within the feldspar.

FORMATION:   Amazonite is a variety of the potassium feldspar called microcline.  It forms in small prismatic crystals, or large masses, often with Albite Feldspar, Black Tourmaline, Quartz or Smokey Quartz.

CHEMICAL FORMULA:  K(AlSi3O8)

HARDNESS:   6 - 7  on the Mohs scale

CLEANSING:  Our favourite way to cleanse Amazonite is with fresh water if you need more flexibility or earth for grounding

CARE:  Due to it's natural growth plates, Amazonite can break easily if bumped at a particular angle.
