HISTORY

Lapis Lazuli, or Lapis for short, is one of the oldest opaque gemstones in history that has been prized since antiquity for its intense colour and belief it can worn off evil energies.  Lapis has been one of the most sough after stones since mans history began.  It's deep celestial blue colour remains a symbol of royalty and honour, Gods and power, spirit and vision.  It's name comes from the Latin word “Lapis” meaning stone and the Persian word “Lāzaward” meaning sky or heavens.

It has appeared in many Egyptian archaeological sites that date back to about 3000 BC. The golden sarcophagus of King Tutankhamen was richly inlaid with Lapis.  For Egyptians the deep cobalt blue colour was a spiritual contrast to the tones of the desert, the golden flecks of pyrite were like stars in the night sky.  By meditating on these colours they felt supernatural forces would transform their lives.  They also used ground Lapis to wear around their eyes to improve eyesight

Sumerians believed that the spirit of their gods lived within the stone.

Leonardo Divinci and Michaelangelo used ground Lapis pigment for their art. The Old Testament documents Exodus standing on a stone of Lapis when he saw the God of Israel.

FORMATION:  Lapis Lazuli isn't a mineral itself but a rock made up of three minerals, Lazurite, White Calcite and Pyrite.  Diopside, Amphibole, Feldspar, Mica, Apatite, Titanite and Zircon may also form with Lapis Lazuli.   To be called "Lapis Lazuli," a rock must contain at least 25% blue Lazurite.

HARDNESS:   5 - 6 on the Mohs scale

ORIGIN:   Afghanistan, Argentina, Canada, Chille, Pakistan, Russia, USA.  Afghanistan has been one of the world's main sources of Lapis through most of history, these mines are mostly occupied by the Taliban and members of the Islamic State. They operate illegal mines, attack other mines to capture their production, and demand protection payments from intimidated mine operators. Revenue from these activities is used to fund war and terrorism.  For this reason we recommend buying Lapis sourced from countries other than Afghanistan.
