    Bloodstone is also called called Heliotrope, Blood Jasper or Oriental Jasper.  

    Bloodstone is a dark green Chalcedony with red inclusions of iron oxide or Red Jasper that resemble spots of blood. Legend tells the story that this crystal was once simply green, but when Jesus was crucified, his blood spilled upon the stone giving it the red splashes. This has imbued the crystal with Christ’s energy, giving the crystal energies that encourage healing, altruism and strength against adversity. Bloodstone can also assist in opening your heart to all in your life, including your enemies.

    HISTORY, FOLKLORE and OVERVIEW

    In ancient times it was believed to be an audible oracle, giving warning of danger.

    Bloodstone was used in 1000 BC in ancient Babylon to overcome enemies.  It was believed to have mystical and magical powers that could control the weather and banish negative energies.

    Legend tells the story that this crystal was once simply green, but when Jesus was crucified, his blood spilled upon the stone giving it the red splashes. This has imbued the crystal with Christ’s energy, giving the crystal energies that encourage healing, altruism and strength against adversity.

    Pliny the Elder (1st century) documented that magicians used Bloodstone as a stone of invisibility. Damigeron (4th century) believe the stone could make rain, solar eclipse, and preserving health and youth.

    In India it is used to stop bleeding by holding the stone in cold water and then holding on the wound / injury.  

    Ancient Greeks and Romans wore Bloodstone to increase endurance.

    In Indian Bloodstone is ground into powder and used as an aphrodisiac and worth considerably more than selling it as a gem stone, hence Bloodstone can often be hard to find.

    COLOURS:  Dark green with red / yellow spots

    GREEN formed through inclusions of Chlorite, Amphibole and Proxene  

    RED formed by Red Jasper / Hematite inclusions

    When more colours are present the crystal is often called "Fancy Jasper"
