Green Banded Calcite is often mislabelled, Green Onyx but Onyx a form of parallel banded black Agate.  Banded Calcites are often labeled as Onyx due to its banding and the perception that they will fetch higher prices.  

There are two variations of Green Calcite, Pistachio Calcite and Green Banded Calcite.  They have the same metaphysical properties but have slight variations in colour and texture.

HISTORY and OVERVIEW

Green Banded Calcite is often mislabelled, Green Onyx but Onyx a form of parallel banded black Agate.  Banded Calcites are often labeled as Onyx due to its banding and the perception that they will fetch higher prices.  Despite retailers in the USA have been sued for incorrectly labelling Green Banded Calcite as Onyx, the name has stuck.  Onyx however is a harder material, 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, whereas Calcites are 3 on the Mohs scale making Calcites much more common as they are significantly easier to carve and polish.  

Calcite is a rock forming mineral that is extremely common.  It's found throughout the world in sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks.  Some geologists consider Calcite to be a "ubiquitous mineral", one that is found everywhere. 

Calcite is one of the most widely used minerals, used in construction, as an abrasive, agricultural soil treatment, pigment, pharmaceutical and more.

Aragonite will change to calcite within days at temperatures exceeding 300 °C.

May be banded (white, cream to brown streaks) and a chalky or waxy texture.  The banded variety is called Green Banded Calcite and non banded is called Pistachio Calcite, they can be very difficult to distinguish if the bands are wide and you have a piece of green calcite that just happens to have been cut without the banding on it.

VARIETIES   

Green Banded Calcite, and Pistachio Calcite can be very difficult to distinguish.  If the bands are wide apart on the original piece, you may have a crystal that just happens to have been cut without the banding on it.  Pistachio normally has a blue hue, Green Banded Calcite normally has a yellow hue.
