HISTORY and OVERVIEW

Tiger's Eye was first discovered by a French traveller and ornithologist Francois Levaillant in 1784 in South Africa.  He describes arriving at a large river and finding pebbles along the beach on its banks saying “I also saw one extraordinary stone, to which I cannot yet give a name. It is as large as a nutmeg, has a varying splendor like the opal or cat’s eye, but is of a browner hue, with a gold-coloured belt. It strikes fire with steel".  It wasn't scientifically described until 1811 by the German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth.

It is believed that Roman Soldiers wore Tiger's Eye to protect them in battle.
