Botryoidal
Botryoidal
Botryoidal is when the habit of the crystal or mineral (the shape in which the crystal grows), is a cluster of tiny round balls.
Its name comes from the Ancient Greek word Bótrus, meaning "a bunch of grapes".
Malachite, Botryoidal Amethyst (Grape Agate), Hematite, Fluorite, Chyrsocolla, Hematite and Fluorite are examples of crystals and minerals that can be found growing in a Botryoidal habit.
Minerals take on a botryoidal habit when they form in an environment containing specks of sand, dust, or other particles that act as "seeds" for tiny crystal spheres to grow at the same or very similar rate. This results in crystals developing in a cluster of tiny spheres.
Some examples of Botryoidal crystals are:
- Chalcedony
- Grape Agate
- Hematite
- Malachite
- Smithsonite
