As the name suggests, Salt Lamps are made of salt, salt absorbs water, so it's important to keep your Salt Lamp warm to evaporate any excess water your lamp absorbs from the atmosphere.  If the lamp is turned off (or you use a LED bulb) it will be prone to "melting", especially in humid conditions.  

The warm salt generates and emits negative ions. Salt lamps are hygroscopic, when they attract the water from the air, the heat from the light inside the lamp makes the water evaporate again. This evaporation process is what produces negative ions that are known to help fight depression and boost our immune system.
